State Government orders closure of schools
The Ondo State Government has ordered the temporary closure of some public primary and secondary schools across the state ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Assembly election holding on Wednesday, May 20, 2026.
The announcement was made through a statement from the Ondo State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
The ministry explained that the affected schools will be used as polling centres during the election, which is expected to take place in all 18 local government areas of the state.
According to the government, the closure is to help maintain safety for pupils, teachers, and other school workers while the election is ongoing.
It also said the decision will allow voting activities to take place smoothly within school premises without disruption.
Students, teachers, and staff in the affected schools have been directed to remain at home on the election day.
School authorities are expected to ensure full compliance, while education officials in different zones and local government areas will monitor the situation.
The ministry also reassured parents and candidates sitting for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC-SSCE) that arrangements have been made so that examinations continue without interruption.
It added that special attention will be given to the safety of students, especially those staying in boarding schools.
Normal academic activities are expected to resume in the affected schools on Thursday, May 21, 2026, after the election has been completed.
