EFCC Arrests Former Minister
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman.
His arrest comes days after he was convicted by the Federal High Court in Abuja over a multi-billion naira fraud case linked to power projects in the country.
EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, confirmed to Channels TV that the former minister was arrested around 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday in Kaduna.
Mamman was reportedly picked up alongside two persons accused of shielding him from security operatives.
The anti-graft agency is also investigating the house where he was found.
The former minister was recently sentenced to 75 years imprisonment after Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court found him guilty on all 12 counts filed against him by the EFCC.
The charges were linked to the laundering and diversion of about N33.8 billion meant for major power projects, including the Mambilla and Zungeru hydroelectric projects.
The court held that the prosecution proved that public funds were moved through private companies and used for unlawful transactions while Mamman served as minister under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Justice Omotosho ordered that the jail terms on the different counts should run consecutively, bringing the total sentence to 75 years.
The court also directed security agencies to arrest and hand him over to correctional authorities after he failed to appear in court for judgment.
