The Ekiti State Police Command has announced a statewide restriction on vehicular movement ahead of the governorship election scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026, as part of efforts to maintain peace and security during the voting process.
The police disclosed the development on Friday in Ado-Ekiti, stating that the restriction will take effect from midnight and remain in force until 6:00 p.m. on election day.
According to the command, the measure is aimed at ensuring a peaceful, orderly and violence-free election across the state.
The restriction will affect movement on both intra-state and inter-state roads within Ekiti.
It will also cover all forms of motorised transportation, including private and commercial vehicles, trucks, motorcycles and tricycles.
Residents travelling through the state on election day have been advised to make alternative travel plans and use other routes, as movement across the state will be limited during the election period.
However, the police said candidates and students taking recognised national examinations will be allowed to travel to their examination centres despite the movement restriction.
The command also stated that officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), ad hoc election workers, journalists, election observers, emergency responders, medical personnel and other essential service providers will be permitted to move during the restriction period.
Such individuals must possess valid identification cards and official clearance tags.
The police further warned that VIPs accompanied by armed security escorts will not be allowed access to polling units or collation centres during the election.
In addition, vigilante groups, volunteer security outfits and other quasi-security organisations have been barred from providing security services throughout the election period.
Construction firms currently handling road projects in the state were also directed to suspend active work during the election for safety reasons.
The command explained that only personnel from recognised security agencies operating under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) would be authorised to provide security at polling units, collation centres and other election-related facilities.
The Commissioner of Police overseeing security for the governorship election, CP Abayomi Shogunle, appealed to registered voters to conduct themselves peacefully and participate in the election responsibly.
He assured residents that adequate security arrangements had been put in place before, during and after the poll.
The police chief also urged members of the public to remain law-abiding and promptly report any suspicious activity to security agencies through the appropriate channels.
