The Directorate of State (DOS) of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced the indefinite suspension of the Office of the Leader of IPOB and the position of Director of Radio Biafra, both of which are occupied by Nnamdi Kanu.
The decision was disclosed in a statement released on Thursday by the Head of the Directorate of State, Chikadibia Edoziem.
According to the group, the move takes immediate effect and will remain in place until further notice.
The leadership explained that the action was taken as part of efforts to protect the organisation’s activities, members and overall mission.
It said the suspension was also aimed at preventing security risks and avoiding situations that could create instability in the South-East region.
IPOB stated that some individuals and groups have allegedly been acting in its name without authorisation, carrying out activities that do not align with the movement’s objectives.
The group said any unlawful act committed under the authority of the suspended office should not be linked to IPOB but to those responsible for such actions.
The Directorate maintained that the decision was necessary to stop what it described as reckless conduct and unauthorised claims of authority that could expose members to arrests, torture or even death.
The group further declared that it would no longer accept responsibility for actions taken by persons who do not hold active positions within the organisation or who have not been approved by the Directorate of State to act on its behalf.
According to the statement, the suspension forms part of a broader effort to strengthen and reorganise the Biafra self-determination movement.
The DOS said members reached the decision during a meeting held on June 17, 2026, after considering what it described as the best interest of Biafrans.
IPOB also insisted that the movement was created and sustained by Biafrans in the diaspora and not by a single individual.
It argued that no person, regardless of status, has the authority to dissolve the Directorate of State, which it described as the highest body responsible for overseeing the affairs of the organisation.
As a result, the group dismissed any reported attempt to dissolve the Directorate, describing such actions as invalid and urging members as well as the public to disregard them.
The DOS listed several reasons behind its decision, including intelligence reports concerning alleged meetings involving security agencies and Kanu, concerns over communications that it claimed led to arrests and deaths of members, and fears that some individuals were planning to create a new militia that could trigger fresh violence in the region.
The leadership said it reviewed intelligence reports from its internal structures and became concerned about developments it believes could threaten the future of the movement.
It also expressed worries that ongoing events could eventually weaken or dismantle IPOB if not addressed.
