Two Nigerian Army personnel have been arrested by the military police for allegedly providing security and escorting celebrities at the wedding of popular content creators Peller and Jarvis without authorisation.
The soldiers were identified as Private Onasanya Ifeoluwa and Private Ukpai Onyinyechi, both attached to the 81 Division Medical Services and Hospital (81DMSH) in Obalende, Lagos.
They were reportedly arrested over alleged unlawful conduct and illegal deployment at the star-studded wedding, which was held in Lagos on July 31.
The ceremony drew several celebrities and generated widespread attention online. A viral video showing a soldier escorting content creator and hypewoman Ivanna as a bodyguard sparked criticism, with many saying the incident brought the Nigerian Army into disrepute.
The arrest comes as the military continues its crackdown on personnel accused of misconduct. Recall that a soldier was recently arrested after appearing in military uniform during a TikTok live session where he begged for money.
According to SaharaReporters, the latest incident has again raised concerns over the welfare of military personnel, as some soldiers have previously turned to social media to complain about poor pay and working conditions.
The report added that despite President Bola Tinubu’s approval of the recruitment of 24,000 new soldiers and an 80 per cent salary increase for troops, questions remain over whether improved welfare will help curb misconduct, unauthorised deployments and other acts capable of damaging the military’s image.
