NDC makes new agreement with Obi, Kwankwaso
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has struck a new agreement with its presidential candidate Peter Obi and vice presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso.
Under the agreement, Obi and Kwankwaso will nominate key officials for the Presidential Campaign Council in consultation with the party leadership.
The positions include the Director-General of the campaign, Deputy Director-General for the North, spokesman, deputy spokesman, Head of New Media, Finance Director and Deputy Finance Director, among others.
The NDC said the presidential candidate and his running mate had been given the freedom to make the nominations while working with the party leadership.
The party also agreed that the Finance Director and Deputy Finance Director would work with the National Treasurer to manage funds for the presidential campaign.
The arrangement, according to the party, is aimed at ensuring proper management of campaign funds and accountability, particularly because the party would be required to submit its financial records to the Independent National Electoral Commission in line with the Electoral Act.
The NDC said it had already prepared a full structure for the campaign council since August and presented it to Obi and Kwankwaso for their input.
The party added that nominations had also been received from stakeholders across different parts of the country as part of efforts to create an inclusive campaign team.
The NDC said it would announce and inaugurate the Presidential Campaign Council once it receives the final input from Obi and Kwankwaso.
The party also disclosed that it had prepared a campaign timetable since August but was still working on funding and fundraising arrangements for the election.
It said the fundraising exercise would be led by the presidential candidate and his running mate, with the money raised to be paid into the presidential campaign account.
The account would be managed by officials nominated by Obi and Kwankwaso alongside the party’s National Treasurer.
The inauguration of the Presidential Campaign Council was initially scheduled for the first week of September but was postponed due to the travel schedule of the presidential candidate.
The party further called on its candidates at all levels to discourage their supporters and campaign groups from engaging in internal disputes and instead concentrate on winning the elections.
The NDC said its candidates should work together and direct their efforts towards defeating the ruling All Progressives Congress in the 2027 elections.
The party maintained that it had completed its part of the preparations and was ready to take further steps towards building a strong campaign structure.
It urged its candidates and supporters to focus on the elections and work towards securing victories at their respective levels, noting that the candidates are contesting under the platform of the NDC rather than as independent candidates.
