Nigerian man wins largest event in World Series poker history worth $1.1million [photos]

A Nigerian man identified as Femi Fashakin, has set a new record by winning the largest event in World Series of Poker history which is worth $1,147,449 along with his first gold bracelet.

Femi, a Florida-based Nigerian took place in the WSOP tournament which had 5000 more players than the last event. 

This was Femi’s first ever finals table with his highest score prior to this being $11,250. 

“I stared playing at local bars,” Fashakin said to WSOP reporters after his win. “Hold’em and all that. I played that about six months to one year. And I thought I had graduated. So, I started playing at the Hard Rock in Tampa and I had a few cashes. Then I started to go to South Florida and played some $360s and then some $570s.”

Fashakin’s final opponent was Paul Cullen, a 35-year-old native of Montreal who now lives in Las Vegas. This win puts him in 321st place in the 2019 POY race, sponsored by Global Poker.
