Popular feminist and social worker Lolo Cynthia, has tackled the practice of female children’s ears being pierced as babies.
She explained how this was detrimental to the ability of the girl to choose if she wanted the piercing or not.
She added that the culture reaffirmed the set gender roles of women in the society which needs to be dismantled according to feminists rhetoric.

She wrote:
The only reason the ears of your female child is pierced at birth is to point out her gender.
It’s a harmless practices that is founded on gender construct.
It takes away the ability of the girl to choose if she wants pierced ears & reinforces the accepted appearance for girls
