Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Gabriel Dewan has resigned from his position.
He announced his resignation during an emergency session held on Wednesday at the temporary Assembly Complex in Jos.
Dewan, who represents the Young Progressives Party is the only lawmaker from the party in the House.
His resignation came after a closed-door meeting with Governor Caleb Mutfwang and other lawmakers, aimed at resolving months of internal tension within the House.
Following Dewan’s exit, lawmakers unanimously elected Daniel Nanlong, the member representing Mikang Constituency, to lead the 24-member legislature.
Nanlong, a member of the All Progressives Congress, had previously served as Majority Leader in the 9th Assembly.
His appointment was handled by Deputy Speaker Gwotta Ajang, who presided over the emergency session and coordinated the leadership transition.
