As Lagos State prepares for the Local Government elections scheduled for Saturday, July 13, the State Police Command has announced that there will be a total restriction of vehicle movement across the state from 3:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m on election day.
This restriction covers both roads and waterways within Lagos, with exceptions only for emergency services, accredited election officials, observers, and journalists.
The police say this move is aimed at ensuring a peaceful and credible election across the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas in the state.
In a statement released by the command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, the public was warned that anyone caught violating the restriction would be arrested and prosecuted.
The statement also made it clear that no armed escorts or security aides are allowed to accompany candidates or political figures to polling or collation centres.
Additionally, the use of sirens and vehicles with covered number plates is banned during the election period.
Only individuals with proper identification tags issued by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) will be allowed access to election venues.
Anyone without such ID will be treated as a suspect and may face investigation and prosecution.
Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, has urged Lagos residents to comply with the rules, remain peaceful, and report any suspicious activity to the police using the emergency lines 08063299264 and 08065154338.
He warned that anyone planning to cause violence or disrupt the process whether thugs, hoodlums, or their sponsors will be arrested and dealt with according to the law.
Political parties have also been advised to caution their members and supporters to conduct themselves within the limits of the electoral act.
The police stressed they would not tolerate any form of violence, intimidation, or disorder during the election.
Parents and guardians were urged to speak to their children to stay away from trouble.
The police assured that they, along with other security agencies, are fully prepared to ensure the election is safe and fair for all.
