The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has explained why it is not taking part in the local government elections happening in Lagos today, July 12.
According to the party, internal conflict and leadership struggles prevented it from preparing properly for the election.
Ogini Olaposi, the party’s national publicity secretary, said the problems worsened when a faction led by the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, tried to take control of the party’s leadership.
Despite winning two legal battles in their favour, the NNPP admitted they still could not put their house in order in time to organise effective campaigns.
Olaposi called the decision to withdraw regrettable but necessary, adding that this kind of situation had never happened since the party was formed in 2021.
He also blamed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for not updating the party’s registration details or recognising its current leadership under Dr. Agbo Major, which added to the delay in their preparations.
Although the leadership and logo issues have now been resolved, Olaposi said the damage was already done.
Following an emergency meeting in Abuja, the party has directed its Lagos members, led by state chairperson Anikè Adebowale, to support another party that shares similar beliefs.
However, he did not name the party they were asked to support.
