The Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) lawmakers have removed Matthew Yare as speaker of the legislative council and replaced him with Jankaro Ibrahim.
The development took place on Monday after a motion was moved during a brief session of the council.
The motion was introduced by Mathias Aliu, councillor representing Wuse ward, and was adopted through a voice vote conducted by Deputy Speaker Tony Onoja.
Yare, who represents Nyanya ward, is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He lost his position to Ibrahim, the All Progressives Congress (APC) councillor representing Kabusa ward.
Ibrahim assumed the role of presiding officer immediately after the vote.
He explained that the decision was driven by the fact that APC members now hold the majority seats in the council with eight councillors against PDP’s four.
The change of leadership comes months after AMAC chairman, Christopher Maikalangu, defected from the PDP to the APC, a move he said would allow him to serve residents of the federal capital’s municipal area better.
