People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar has reacted to the Supreme Court’s judgement upholding the election of president Bola Tinubu.

In a statement by the PDP on Thursday, the party expressed strong discontent over the Supreme Court ruling.

The PDP voiced its alarm, disappointment, and deep concern regarding the rationale behind the Supreme Court’s decision to affirm Tinubu as the victor in the electoral contest.

In the statement issued by the opposition party’s spokesman, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the PDP lamented that the verdict is a disheartening development for Nigeria’s democracy, as it believes the Supreme Court failed to uphold the letter of the law.

The party had expected the Supreme Court to uphold the clear provisions of the 1999 Constitution, particularly in terms of the qualifications and minimum requirements for a presidential election winner in Nigeria, including the required statutory 25% of votes in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The PDP also pointed to concerns over violations of electoral rules and guidelines, manipulation, and alterations of election results by the APC.

The PDP further expressed bewilderment at how the Supreme Court seemingly overlooked issues of forgery, falsehood, and perjury, citing technicalities as a basis for its decision.

The fallout from this judgment has left a cloud of gloom, melancholy, and despondency across the nation.
