A bill proposing the creation of a Federal University of Technology in Badagry, Lagos State has passed its third reading in the House of Representatives.
The bill is now set to move to the Senate for approval.
The university aims to ease the strain on existing universities and provide more educational options for students in Badagry and surrounding areas.
The bill was introduced by Hon. Sesi Oluwaseun Whingan, the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources and representative of Badagry Federal Constituency.
This move is seen as part of efforts to address the education gap in the region.
On May 6, 2025, the Majority Leader, Rep. Julius Ihonvbere, presented the bill for its third reading during a plenary session in the House.
Hon. James Faleke also spoke in favour of the bill, stressing the need for more local institutions that can cater to the increasing number of young Nigerians who are seeking education abroad due to the lack of local opportunities.
Hon. Whingan expressed appreciation to his fellow lawmakers for their support, describing the advancement of the bill as a step closer to fulfilling the long-held dream of establishing a federal university in the region.
He added that this development would provide a local option for future generations to study and contribute to society.
