A Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that former President Goodluck Jonathan is eligible to contest the 2027 presidential election.
The case was filed by Johnmary Jideobi, who asked the court to stop Jonathan from taking part in the race. He also wanted the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to be barred from accepting or publishing Jonathan’s name as a presidential candidate.
The plaintiff urged the court to decide if, based on sections of the 1999 Constitution, Jonathan could still seek the office of president again after previously serving in that position.
There was also an attempt within a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, which had recently granted Jonathan a waiver and positioned him as a possible presidential candidate for the party.
Delivering judgment on Tuesday, Justice Peter Lifu ruled that Jonathan is free to participate in the 2027 presidential election if he chooses.
