The House of Representatives on Wednesday made some changes to its committee leadership as Speaker Tajudeen Abbas announced a small reshuffle involving three lawmakers.
The decision led to new appointments and reassignments within the legislative committees.
Mike Etaba, who represents Obubra/Etung Federal Constituency in Cross River State, has been moved from his role as chairman of the Committee on Public Petitions and will now lead the Committee on Environment.
Bitrus Laori from Adamawa State has taken over the leadership of the Committee on Public Petitions.
Before this, he was in charge of the Committee on Cooperation and Integration in Africa.
Filling the gap left by Laori, Billy Osawaru from Edo State has been promoted from deputy to chairman of the Committee on Cooperation and Integration in Africa.
This adjustment comes shortly after the Committee on Public Petitions sent out invitations to the governors of Benue and Zamfara States, Hyacinth Alia and Dauda Lawal, along with the leaders of their state houses of assembly.
The invitation was based on a petition raised by a civil society group known as Guardians of Democracy and Rule of Law.
The group alleged that there was political instability in the state assemblies and asked the federal lawmakers to look into it.
The committee requested the governors and speakers to appear and explain why the federal parliament should not step in to take over the work of their assemblies.
