The Federal Government has granted full statutory licence to Iconic Open University allowing them to operate as a full-fledged private university.
Iconic Open University is located at No. 1B Gusau Road, after Government House Roundabout, Sokoto.
They have campuses in Lagos and Abuja.
The licence was issued through the National Universities Commission (NUC) in Abuja on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, following the successful completion of the university’s probationary period, which began in 2023.
The approval came after a licence validation assessment conducted by the NUC in May 2026.
During the exercise, the commission assessed the university’s academic programmes, faculty, governance structures, infrastructure, quality assurance systems and overall institutional capacity.
With the approval, Iconic Open University has moved from a provisional licence to a Full Statutory Licence, allowing it to continue providing university education and awarding degrees in line with Nigerian laws and regulatory requirements.
The licence was issued jointly by the Federal Ministry of Education and the NUC under the leadership of the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the NUC Executive Secretary, Prof Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu.
The university described the development as a major milestone in its history, saying it reflects the institution’s progress in academic standards, institutional development, innovation and regulatory compliance.
Iconic Open University also noted that securing the full licence three years after receiving its initial licence in 2023 marked a major stage in its development and its efforts to expand access to higher education in Nigeria.
The university management expressed appreciation to the Federal Government, NUC, students, faculty, staff, partners and other members of its community for their contributions to the institution’s development.
