How Burna Boy lost all seven nominations at BET Awards

Singer Burna Boy has lost all the seven nominations at the 2023 BET Awards.

Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, Damini Ogulu popularly known as Burna Boy, has faced disappointment as he lost all seven of his nominations at the 2023 BET Hip-hop Awards.

The awards ceremony took place at Atlanta’s Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center on October 3 and was broadcast on October 10.

Burna Boy, often referred to as the ‘African Giant,’ missed out on several major categories, including Hip Hop Artist of the Year, Lyricist of the Year, and Best Live Performer of the Year, all of which were claimed by American rapper Kendrick Lamar.

Furthermore, Burna Boy was defeated in the Hustler of the Year category by 50 Cent and Best Collaboration of the Year for his track ‘Sittin’ On Top Of The World’ featuring 21 Savage, which was won by Lil Durk and J. Cole’s ‘All My Life.’

Additional losses for Burna Boy came in the Best Hip Hop Video category for ‘Sittin’ On Top Of The World,’ which was bested by Lil Uzi Vert’s ‘Just Wanna Rock,’ and in the Song of the Year category, where the same song emerged victorious.

Kendrick Lamar emerged as the night’s dominant figure, securing a remarkable four awards.

He achieved a clean sweep in all categories where he was nominated, including Hip Hop Artist of the Year, Lyricist of the Year, Best Live Performer, and even Video Director of the Year, alongside his collaborator Dave Free.

Adding to the international recognition, Ghanaian music sensation Black Sherif claimed victory in the Best International Flow category, surpassing formidable competitors like South Africa’s late AKA and K.O, France’s Gazo and Ninho, and UK’s J Hus, Central Cee, and others.
