Lawmaker dumps APC
Saba Gideon, the lawmaker representing Edu State Constituency in the Kwara State House of Assembly, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) following concerns about the way the party handles internal affairs.
Gideon confirmed his decision on Thursday, August 27, 2026, after submitting his resignation to the APC Ward Chairman of Tsaragi Ward 3 in Edu Local Government Area.
The lawmaker, who serves as Chairman of the House Committee on Livestock, said he reached the decision after consulting members of his constituency and other political stakeholders.
He said developments within the APC had raised concerns for him, particularly over the party’s approach to internal democracy, fairness and the involvement of members in its affairs.
Gideon, however, said leaving the APC would not change his responsibility to the people of Edu State Constituency.
He said he would continue to serve his constituents and carry out his duties as a legislator.
The lawmaker also expressed appreciation to the APC and its members for the experience and support he received during his time in the party.
Gideon did not reveal which political party or platform he intends to join next.
His departure from the APC comes several months after he became involved in a dispute with the leadership of the Kwara State House of Assembly.
In December 2025, the Assembly suspended Gideon for three months following allegations that he secretly recorded a closed-door meeting of the lawmakers and shared the recording with a person who was not authorised to receive it.
The suspension followed a motion presented by the Leader of the House, Abdulkadir Magaji.
The action was based on provisions relating to legislative privileges and the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act.
The Assembly leadership had argued that the recording and distribution of the private proceedings amounted to a breach of legislative privilege and could damage the reputation of the House.
Gideon rejected the suspension and took the matter to court, challenging the legality of the action.
In February 2026, the Kwara State High Court ruled in his favour and cancelled the suspension.
The court described the action as unconstitutional and unlawful, stating that the process used by the Assembly did not comply with the applicable law and rules.
The court also found that the suspension had been imposed through a motion without prior notice and ruled that it had no legal effect.
The court case further deepened the disagreement between Gideon and the leadership of the Kwara Assembly.
