Shocking facts about new chairman of Access Holdings PLC

Access Holdings Plc’s leadership has appointed Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, CFR, as its new Non-Executive Chairman, succeeding Mr. Abubakar Jimoh following the unfortunate passing of Dr. Herbert Wigwe, the former Group Chief Executive Officer.

Aig-Imoukhuede, a distinguished lawyer and banker renowned for his extensive expertise in investment banking, returns to lead Access Holdings.

Here are 25 intriguing facts about Aig-Imoukhuede:

He was born on September 24, 1966, in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, he hails from Sabongida-Ora, Edo State.

He graduated with an LLB degree from the University of Benin, Edo State, in 1986 at the age of 19 and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1987.


Aig-Imoukhuede holds a Trium MBA jointly awarded by the London School of Economics, New York University, and HEC Paris.


In 2000, he completed a three-month Executive Management Programme at Harvard Business School.


He began his career as a lawyer at Continental Merchant Bank during his NYSC year in 1988.


Aig-Imoukhuede joined Guaranty Trust Bank Plc in December 1991, resigning as executive director in March 2002.


He led the 2002 acquisition of AccessAccess Bank and served as its group managing director and CEO until December 2013.


Aig-Imoukhuede retired as president of the Nigerian Stock Exchange in 2017 but remains on the National Council as an ex-officio.


He served as a non-executive director of Africa Finance Corporation from 2008 to June 2, 2017.


Since December 1, 2011, he has been the chairman of Associated Discount House Limited.


He serves as a director of Petralon Energy and retired as chairman of Wapic Insurance Plc, where he has been a director since November 2011.


Aig-Imoukhuede also served as boardboard chairman and director of FMDQ OTC PLC until August 1, 2014.


He founded Coronation Capital Limited in 2015 and has overseen its growth and expansion.


In October 2021, he collaborated with the office of the Head of the Nigerian Civil Service to digitize work processes and public service delivery.


He is a past President of The Nigerian Stock Exchange, succeeding Aliko Dangote.


Aig-Imoukhuede was conferred with the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) in 2011 by President Goodluck Jonathan for his contributions to banking and finance.


He received the National ProductivityOrder of Merit Award in 2009.


In 2011, he was inducted into the Ernst and Young World Entrepreneurs Hall of Fame and named African Banker of the Year in 2013.


Aig-Imoukhuede is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Science and serves on the international advisory board of Oxford University’s Blavatnik School of Government.


He is a fellow of the African Leadership Institute affiliated with the Aspen Institute in Colorado, USA.


Aig-Imoukhuede is an honorary fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) by Olabisi Onabanjo University in 2018.

He founded and chairs the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation, which promotes good governance in Africa through partnerships with institutions like Oxford University.


Aig-Imoukhuede is the first African co-chairman of the Global Business Coalition on Health and chairs Friends of the Global Fund – Africa.


He made a $1 million contribution to the Global Fund in 2010 and continues to support it through the ‘Gift from Africa’ campaign.


Currently, Aig-Imoukhuede serves as chairman of ABCHealth and is a director of the Private Sector Health Alliance of Nigeria.

He initiated the Adopt-A-Healthcare-Facility Programme in 2019 and is vice chairman of Global Citizen Nigeria, creating the Nigerian Solidarity Support Fund in partnership with the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Fund.
