Tinubu gives Gbajabiamila new assignment
President Bola Tinubu has sent his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, and five state governors to Canada for an investment conference aimed at attracting more investment into Nigeria.
The delegation will represent Nigeria at the maiden Nigeria Diaspora Investment Economic Conference scheduled to take place in Toronto from August 12 to 15, 2026.
Gbajabiamila will lead the delegation, which includes Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang and Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal.
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) announced the names of the Nigerian delegates in a statement issued by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, head of media, public relations and protocols at the commission.
The conference, which will focus on investment opportunities, will be held under the theme, “Invest Nigeria, Thrive Abroad.”
The event is expected to bring Nigerian and Canadian government officials, investors and business leaders together.
Other members of the Nigerian delegation include Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Jumoke Oduwole and Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
Representatives of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Immigration Service and Nigeria Revenue Service are also expected to attend the conference.
Officials from the Nigeria Investment Promotion Commission, Nigeria Export Promotion Council and National Information Technology Development Agency will also be present.
The conference is expected to give Nigeria an opportunity to present investment opportunities to Nigerians in the diaspora and foreign investors. Discussions will also focus on ways to improve business cooperation and strengthen economic ties between Nigeria and Canada.
NiDCOM said the event will connect investors with projects and business opportunities in sectors considered important to Nigeria’s economic development.
NiDCOM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Abike Dabiri-Erewa said the participation of senior Nigerian officials shows the Federal Government’s interest in expanding trade, investment and economic cooperation with Canada.
She said the conference would also provide an avenue for both countries to build stronger economic relations and create more opportunities for businesses and investors.
Canada is expected to send senior government officials to the event, including Shafqat Ali, president of the Treasury Board of Canada, Graham McGregor, Ontario’s minister of citizenship and multiculturalism, and Patrick Brown, mayor of Brampton.
The conference is being organized by NiDCOM in partnership with the Nigerian High Commission in Ottawa, the Canadian High Commission in Abuja and other Nigerian, Canadian and international stakeholders.
The meeting is expected to create opportunities for new business partnerships while encouraging more Nigerians living abroad to invest in the country’s economy.
