Tinubu orders former governor to withdraw from Senate race
President Bola Tinubu has directed former Cross River State Governor, Ben Ayade, to withdraw from the Senate race in 2027.
Ayade in a post on his Facebook page said the instruction followed discussions with the Presidency in Abuja.
He stated that he agreed to step down even though he is unhappy with the decision and feels hurt by how things have played out.
He also said there may have been incomplete information given to the President about the political situation in Cross River State and those who may benefit from his withdrawal.
Ayade recalled his time in the All Progressives Congress, saying he was the first APC governor from the South-South region and worked to build the party’s strength in the state.
He also said he helped the party secure strong votes for the presidential election in Cross River.
The former governor added that he has not received any appointment since leaving office, despite his contributions to the party and support for the current administration.
He expressed displeasure that he was asked to step aside for another aspirant who joined the party recently, saying the decision was difficult for him to accept.
Despite his concerns, Ayade called on his supporters to remain calm and respect the President’s instruction for now, while leaving room for possible review of the decision.
He also told his supporters not to go ahead with buying nomination forms for the Senate contest, saying it would go against the directive he received.
Ayade maintained that he remains loyal to the ruling party and said he will continue to support APC candidates if the decision stands, adding that he is ready to work with party leaders to ensure success in future elections.
