ASUU Strike: No work, no pay – FG to ASUU

After weeks of ongoing indefinite strike action by ASUU, and several futile attempts made by the union and the Nigerian Government(FG) to come to an agreement, the Federal Government has come to a conclusion that henceforth, the salaries of these protesting lecturers be withheld till further notice until they go back to their various classrooms.

The FG sent the memo of the “No work, No pay” rule to all University Vice Chancellors through the National Universities Commission (NUC) to withhold with immediate effect the salaries of the lecturers and that failure to abide by this instruction would be seen and taken as a violation of extant rules and government’s directives.

The memo passed reads, “In view of the current Industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, the Federal Government has directed that there shall be no payment of any form of salaries and allowances to the staff on strike in federal and inter-varsity centers.

“Consequently, I am to direct vice-chancellors to apply the “No-work-no-pay” rule. However, universities and inter-varsity centres are to pay salaries and allowances to non-teaching staff. All Vice-Chancellors and Directors of Centers should note that the salaries to staff on strike from whatever source of funds shall be viewed as violation of extant rules and directive of the Federal Government of Nigeria”
