As the 2027 general elections approach, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s political influence continues to spread, with more governors reportedly preparing to dump their parties for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Sources within the APC confirmed that discussions are ongoing with several governors from the South and North who are expected to announce their defection in the coming weeks.
The development follows the recent exit of Enugu State Governor Peter Mba from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, alongside members of his cabinet.
Barely a day later, Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri also resigned from the PDP with the Speaker of the State House of Assembly and 21 lawmakers.
Party insiders disclosed that Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Abia State Governor Alex Otti are among those already in talks to join the APC.
Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang and Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas are also said to be preparing to switch allegiance to the Tinubu-led political camp.
An APC source revealed that the ruling party has been holding strategic meetings with some northern governors, particularly from the North Central and North East regions, who are equally set to defect before the election season begins.
The move, according to party insiders, aims to weaken the opposition’s structure and solidify APC’s dominance nationwide.
In recent months, the APC has attracted several key opposition figures, including Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and former Delta governor and 2023 PDP vice-presidential candidate Ifeanyi Okowa.
At the moment, the APC controls most states in the South, governing Lagos, Ogun, Ekiti, Ondo, Edo, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Delta, Imo, Ebonyi, and Enugu.
The PDP now holds only Oyo, Rivers, and Osun, while Bayelsa remains in transition.
In the North, the APC maintains control in 13 of 19 states, while the PDP and the NNPP share the remaining ones.
