China warns US over Military threat to Nigeria

The Chinese government has declared its support for Nigeria amid escalating tensions following U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to cut aid and possibly launch military action over alleged killings of Christians in the country.

At a press briefing on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning was asked to comment on Trump’s remarks and Nigeria’s official response rejecting the U.S. president’s claims.

“It’s reported that U.S. President Donald Trump said he named Nigeria a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ because Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria. Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement said that the allegations do not reflect the true situation in Nigeria. Trump said the U.S. will immediately cut off all assistance to Nigeria if the Nigerian government continues to allow the killing of Christians and will very likely launch military operations. What’s China’s comment?” the spokesperson was asked.

Responding, Ning said China stood firmly with Nigeria and condemned any attempt by foreign powers to interfere in the country’s internal affairs under the guise of religion or human rights.

She stated: “As Nigeria’s comprehensive strategic partner, China firmly supports the Nigerian government in leading its people on the development path suited to its national conditions. China firmly opposes any country using religion and human rights as an excuse to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs, and threatening other countries with sanctions and force.”

The statement comes amid mounting global reactions to Trump’s warning and renewed criticism of Nigeria’s government including comments by Binance founder Changpeng Zhao and former Binance employee Tigran Gambaryan, who described the administration as a “lawless regime.”

Recall Dockaysworld reported that Gambaryan, who was detained in Nigeria for eight months, celebrated Trump’s invasion threat and accused the Nigerian government of corruption and extortion, while Binance’s CZ alleged that his former employee had been “kidnapped without cause.”
