Nigeria’s national power grid collapsed on Friday, leading to a nationwide blackout that affected homes and businesses across the country.
The collapse disrupted electricity supply in across the country, forcing households and companies to rely on alternative power sources.
Data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) showed that electricity generation dropped to zero megawatts (MW).
The data also indicated that power supply to all 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) fell to zero as of 1pm on Friday.
The affected DisCos include Benin, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Abuja and Yola, all of which recorded zero power allocation.
Meanwhile, Aba Power is not connected to the national grid and was therefore not affected by the collapse.
Grid restoration efforts have begun, with Ibadan Distribution Company currently receiving about 50MW, while other DisCos remain at zero allocation.
