4 dead as gunmen abduct Zamfara local government chairman

Suspected bandits have abducted the Chairman of Bungudu Local Government Area, Hon. Nura Umar Bungudu, alongside his wife following a late-night attack on their home.

The attackers stormed Bungudu town on Thursday night, targeting the chairman’s residence in the Zango area, less than 20 kilometres from the state capital, Gusau.

Four security personnel including two police officers and two vigilantes were killed after attempting to resist the assailants, who overwhelmed them with superior firepower.

“They killed two policemen and two vigilantes, including one volunteer vigilante who had been actively helping to protect the town,” a local resident said.

The gunmen initially abducted the chairman, his wife, and their children. Responding security operatives pursued the attackers and rescued four or five of the children, but the chairman and his wife were taken away.

Reinforcement teams were deployed to the scene, but they arrived after the attackers had already executed their plan and escaped.

Residents blamed the frequent attacks on the heavy weaponry used by the gunmen and the activities of informants, appealing to authorities to urgently strengthen security across vulnerable communities.

Efforts to obtain official confirmation from the Zamfara State Police Command were unsuccessful, as calls and messages sent to spokesperson DSP Yazid Abubakar were not returned as of filing time.
