A federal high court in Abuja, has sentenced the Inspector-General of the Nigerian Police, Usman Alkali Baba to 6 months in prison.

The order was given by Justice M. O. Olajuwon on Tuesday, November 29, who found the IGP guilty of disobeying a court order.

A police officer Patrick Oloko had filed a suit against the IG for unlawful retirement from the police force.

The Police Service Commission had recommended Okolie to be reinstated but the IG had refused to comply, earning him the ruling by the court.

The court had also ordered the payment of 10 million naira to the Okolie as damages for denial of his rights.

“if at the end of the three months, the contemnor remains recalcitrant and still refuses to purge his contempt, he shall be committed for another period and until he purges his contempt”, the court held.

This is coming after a court had ordered the IGP to detain the EFCC Chairman Abdulrasheed Bawa in Kuje Correctional facility for also being in contempt of court.
