A Nigerian man who reportedly travelled to Russia to fight in the ongoing war against Ukraine has been confirmed dead, though his wife and family in Nigeria remain unaware of his passing.
The man, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was said to have volunteered with the hope of securing fast-track Russian citizenship, a benefit Russia currently offers to foreign nationals who sign military contracts of at least one year.
The news of his death was shared by social media influencer Ezinne Laura Idika, who cited a family friend struggling with how to break the devastating news to the deceased man’s wife in Nigeria.
Despite his tragic death, the man’s family is said to be entitled to compensation exceeding ₦100 million, a sum reportedly promised to the families of foreign soldiers killed in action.
However, growing evidence suggests that many African, Asian, and prisoner recruits lured by similar promises are being denied the benefits they were offered.
Multiple reports indicate that many of these volunteers never received the promised citizenship or financial compensation.
Some were abandoned after suffering injuries, while others died before the application process for citizenship or payment could even begin.
In many of these cases, their families have received nothing.
