Senate President Godswill Akpabio has attributed the growing insecurity across Nigeria to the build-up to the 2027 general elections.
He said attacks by terrorists and bandits are being driven by political motives and will ease shortly after the polls.
“You are seeing insecurity today; it’s even increasing because the election is coming. As soon as the election is over, watch out for the first two weeks; you won’t hear any bomb blasts because people are sponsoring to distract you,” he said.
His comments come amid renewed violence, including a recent Nigerian Air Force airstrike in Yobe State that reportedly killed dozens of civilians.
Akpabio also dismissed opposition claims that Nigeria is drifting toward a one-party state, insisting the ruling All Progressives Congress continues to grow due to the performance of President Bola Tinubu.
“They don’t know what else to do; they say this man is too good in many areas; the government is attracted to him because he is taking very good care of the states,” he said.
He claimed the party now has nearly 32 governors across the country.
The Senate President also took a swipe at Peter Obi over remarks about leaving a political platform if primaries become transactional.
“Opposition is in disarray; someone got six million votes and abandoned the party… and they are blaming the ruling party,” he added.
Akpabio further dismissed calls for the resignation of INEC chairman Joash Amupitan over an alleged partisan statement, urging Nigerians to remain patient with the current administration.
“Let Nigerians be patient with you; you are doing the right thing,” he said.
