Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has officially resigned from his position.
Adelabu submitted his resignation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu via a letter dated April 22 and addressed to the President through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
He stated his intention to contest the governorship election in Oyo State.
In the letter, Adelabu said his decision will take effect from April 30, 2026, to allow for a proper handover of duties.
He expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve as Minister of Power, noting that it was an honour to contribute to the country’s development, especially in the power sector. He also mentioned that his time in office allowed him to be part of efforts aimed at improving electricity supply and supporting economic growth.
Adelabu explained that his resignation is driven by his long-standing ambition to become governor of Oyo State. He traced this political goal back to 2016 when he served as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and later resigned from that position in 2018 to pursue the same ambition.
He added that his decision to step down now is also in line with the provisions of the amended Electoral Act 2026, which requires public office holders seeking elective positions to resign before contesting.
The letter was officially received by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on the same day it was dated, confirming that the Presidency has been notified of his decision.
Adelabu is expected to begin consultations and political activities in Oyo State ahead of the upcoming governorship race.
