Senate President Godswill Akpabio abruptly called for an emergency closed session during Tuesday’s plenary.

This dramatic move was triggered by the Chief Whip, Senator Ali Ndume, who made a passionate point of order, invoking rule 54 of the Senate’s rule book to address concerns about the Senate President’s management of affairs within the chambers.

Senator Ndume declared,

Mr. President, there are certain practices within this chamber that blatantly contravene the rules. Nobody should consider themselves above learning,

Before Senator Ndume could complete his statement, Akpabio swiftly ruled him out of order, intensifying the tension within the Senate.

In a fit of frustration, Senator Ndume angrily left the chamber and headed directly to his office.

However, the story took another twist as Senator Ndume received a phone call from a fellow colleague, urging him to return to the chamber for an executive session.

At the time of reporting, this confidential executive session was still ongoing, leaving many to speculate about the underlying issues that prompted this unprecedented series of events in the Senate.
