Tinubu approves new police academy
President Bola Tinubu has approved the creation of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.
He also approved a take-off grant of N15 billion to support the start of the project.
The approval was made known in a statement on Monday by Bayo Onanuga, who serves as the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy.
The plan follows the law that set up the Nigeria Police Academy in 2021, which allows the main school in Wudil, Kano State, to have additional campuses in other parts of the country.
The funding for the new campus will come from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund allocation for 2026 through TETFund.
The money is meant to support buildings, learning facilities, student housing, and key training equipment needed for police education.
The choice of Erinja came after a meeting that brought together top officials, including the Minister of Police Affairs, the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, officers from the Ministry of Education, the Inspector-General of Police, and the head of the National Universities Commission.
The meeting looked at issues such as student capacity, available funds, quality of training, and the need to expand recruitment for the Nigeria Police Force, which is currently increasing intake.
