Tinubu mourns as top FG official dies months after appointment
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed sadness over the death of the Chairman of the National Population Commission, Dr Aminu Yusuf, who died at the age of 66 after a brief illness.
Dr. Aminu Yusuf was appointed Chairman of the National Population Commission in October 2025 by President Bola Tinubu. He died on Friday, August 28, 2026.
His death has drawn condolences from the Federal Government, Niger State and people who worked with him during his years in public service.
In a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu commiserated with the government and people of Niger State, especially residents of Wushishi Local Government Area where Yusuf came from.
The President also condoled with Yusuf’s family, friends, associates and colleagues, describing the deceased as a dedicated public servant who spent many years working for his community, state and country.
Tinubu recalled Yusuf’s years in public service and his involvement in the political and administrative affairs of Niger State.
He served as Executive Chairman of Wushishi Local Government Area before taking on other responsibilities at both the state and federal levels.
The late NPC chairman was also a member of the board of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control. He later served as Special Adviser on Political Affairs to the Governor of Niger State, giving him experience in government administration and political affairs.
Yusuf became chairman of the National Population Commission before his death.
Although he spent only a short period in the position, Tinubu said he had begun efforts aimed at improving the commission and making demographic information more useful for national planning.
The President said Yusuf was committed to improving the quality of population data available to the country, which is needed by the government when making decisions on development, public services and other national programmes.
Tinubu urged the management and workers of the National Population Commission to continue with the reforms and institutional improvements Yusuf had started during his time as chairman.
He said Yusuf would be remembered for his years of public service, dedication to his duties and contributions to Nigeria.
The President prayed for the late NPC chairman and asked God to grant him eternal rest.
He also prayed for strength and comfort for Yusuf’s family, colleagues, friends and other loved ones as they mourn his death.
