The Nigerian Army has dismissed reports alleging that soldiers are threatening mutiny over unpaid salaries and allowances, describing the claims as false, misleading and deliberately sensational.
In a statement signed by Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, and seen by Dockaysworld, the Army said an online report alleging threats of mutiny was designed to undermine public confidence and national security.
The Army stressed that at no time has there been any threat of mutiny within its ranks, noting that mutiny is a grave offence under military law and contrary to the ethos, discipline and professionalism of Nigerian Army personnel.
Officers and soldiers remain loyal to the Constitution and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, he said.
It faulted the report for relying on anonymous and unverifiable claims circulated through non-official channels.
The Army added that personnel are trained to channel grievances through established military procedures rather than public platforms.
Clarifying issues around remuneration, the Army explained that promotion increments are only one component of military pay and should not be misrepresented as total earnings.
The statement explained that military remuneration includes consolidated salaries, rank-based allowances, operational, field and hardship allowances, as well as other entitlements that vary by deployment, qualification and responsibilities.
The Army said it is working with the Armed Forces of Nigeria and relevant government authorities to implement structured welfare reforms.
These reforms include periodic salary reviews, enhanced operational allowances, improved accommodation, medical care and insurance packages for troops and their families.
It added that the Chief of Army Staff has initiated engagements with appropriate authorities on troop welfare since assuming office. The Army said these efforts are already yielding positive outcomes.
