Top opposition figures in Nigeria are reviewing new political parties as the crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) continues to create uncertainty ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Guardian reports that the situation worsened after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) withdrew recognition of all factions claiming leadership of the ADC.
This followed court rulings and ongoing legal disputes over who controls the party.
With the confusion unresolved, key politicians including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso have begun fresh consultations on possible alternatives.
Their concern is that the crisis could prevent the ADC from properly organising primaries or presenting candidates for major positions in the next elections.
There are also fears that even if candidates emerge under the party, they could face disqualification later if the courts rule against the faction that produced them.
This has made the situation risky for anyone hoping to contest under the ADC.
As a result, opposition leaders are now studying other platforms that appear more stable.
Two parties being considered are the Action Peoples Party (APP) and the New Democratic Congress (NDC).
The APP is seen as relatively organised, with some presence in the National Assembly.
The NDC, on the other hand, is a newer party promoted by Bayelsa former governor, Seriake Dickson and is said to be free from internal disputes for now.
Sources said meetings are being planned in Abuja where opposition figures will decide their next move. These discussions are expected to remain private until a final decision is reached.
Meanwhile, a different report emerged on Monday that due to the ongoing leadership crisis in the ADC, many top figures within the party have started talking with the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) as a backup option.
Discussions between both sides are already in progress, according to party officials.
However the ADC debunked the reports.
