The Federal Government has approved an increment in allowances and welfare benefits for civil servants as part of efforts to improve their earnings and working conditions.
The decision was announced in Abuja on Friday by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, during a briefing where she explained that the changes were approved by the Federal Executive Council.
She said the adjustment covers workers under the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure and the Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure, meaning many categories of public workers will benefit from the new changes.
According to her, the revised peculiar allowances now apply across all grade levels, leading to better pay for both lower and higher-ranking officers in the service.
The government also approved increases in other allowances such as duty tour allowance, estacode, and book allowance. Many of the allowances listed in the Public Service Rules have now been reviewed as part of the update.
One key part of the new policy is the approval of full duty tour allowance for civil servants attending approved training programmes. This applies even when the training takes place within the same city where the worker is based.
The government also introduced a new exit benefit for workers under the Contributory Pension Scheme. From January 1, 2026, retiring civil servants will receive an amount equal to their full annual earnings as an exit package, in addition to their pension.
Walson-Jack said the aim is to ensure that workers leave service with enough financial support after retirement.
In addition, the Employee Compensation Scheme has now been put into full operation. This programme is meant to support workers who suffer injuries or die while carrying out their duties.
