Atiku makes new appointment

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has appointed Dr. Benjamin Chika Ugwu as his Special Assistant and Coordinator of Southeast Support Groups ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The announcement was made on Thursday in Abuja through a statement issued by his media team and signed by Paul Ibe.

In his new position, Ugwu will oversee activities across the five Southeast states—Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo. His task includes organising and strengthening support groups in the region that are linked to the former vice president, who is a leading figure in the African Democratic Congress.

The statement explained that Ugwu is expected to bring structure and coordination to these groups while ensuring they work in line with the political goals of Atiku.

Ugwu was born on December 22, 1970, and has built a career across different fields such as education, business, governance, and humanitarian work.

He studied English for his first degree and later earned qualifications in Economics, including a postgraduate diploma, a master’s degree, and a doctorate in Petroleum Economics.

Over the years, he has held several roles in both Nigeria and abroad. He once served as Special Assistant to former President Goodluck Jonathan between 2010 and 2015, handling projects and special duties. He also worked with the African and Caribbean Business Council, where he served as a regional director covering parts of Africa.

His experience also includes working as Director of Projects and Programming for a development organisation operating in both the United Kingdom and Nigeria. He has also managed credit control operations in London and Lagos, and later led the Ikenga Award for Excellence Foundation as Director General.
