Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, has died while in bandits’ captivity, the Katsina State Government has confirmed.
Abubakar and his wife were abducted in May while travelling through Katsina State. On June 6, a video surfaced online showing the couple appealing to the state government for the release of detained bandits and livestock.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu, said the retired military officer died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity,” the statement said.
“Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the State Government and various Security Agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy.
“The deceased Retired General died a natural death from complications of diabetes and hypertension.”
The state government described the incident as a major loss to the nation.
“His abduction and subsequent death are not only a loss to his family and Katsina State but a monumental loss to the entire country,” the statement added.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and the nation.
“His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Katsina State Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, PhD, CON, extends his deepest condolences to the family of the late General and the country at-large,” the statement said.
The governor reportedly described the incident as a “dark moment” and a reminder of the need for stronger collective action against criminal groups threatening communities.
The Katsina State Government reaffirmed its commitment to working with the federal government and security agencies to bring those responsible to justice.
“We assure the citizens of Katsina State that our resolve to eliminate banditry and ensure the safety of all residents remains unshaken,” the statement added.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family during this difficult time. May the soul of the departed Retired Major General Rabe Abdulakdir rest in eternal peace.”
