Another mobile network suspends data, airtime loans
Airtel Nigeria has announced the temporary suspension of its airtime and data credit service that allows prepaid customers to borrow airtime or data and repay when they make their next recharge.
This development comes shortly after MTN Nigeria also stopped its own airtime and data loan service.
According to Airtel, the decision was taken as part of adjustments to meet new regulatory and operational requirements in Nigeria’s telecom industry.
It explained that it is working to align its services with current rules guiding digital credit and lending services in the country.
Airtel assured customers that normal purchase of airtime and data is not affected. Users can still recharge through all regular channels, and the suspension of the loan service will not disrupt network quality or general service delivery.
The company also described the move as a responsible step to stay in line with compliance expectations and protect customers. It added that it will continue to operate within approved standards while offering other services in the digital space.
Airtel said it will provide further updates to customers when there is a change regarding the suspended service.
