Labour Party Faces Deregistration and Candidate Ban Over Constitutional Breaches

The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court has been petitioned to deregister the Labour Party, LP, and prevent it from presenting candidates in future Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) elections.

The lawsuit, FHC/ABJ/CS/301/2024, involves the Incorporated Trustees of the Center for Reform and Public Advocacy against INEC, LP, Julius Abure (Party Chairman), and Lamidi Apapa (factional Chairman).

The plaintiff argues that the LP, violating constitutional provisions, hasn’t held a national convention since 2019.

The suit seeks various declarations, orders, and injunctions, emphasizing the LP’s alleged breaches of constitutionalsections.

The plaintiff contends that INEC should deregister the LP due to these breaches and challenges the legitimacy of the LP’s factional chairmen.

The LP is accused of lacking the necessary records with INEC, a requirement for political party functionality in Nigeria according to the 1999 Constitution. No hearing date has been set for the case.
