Nigerian Army claims crossfire as reason for killing NYSC Corp member Abdulsamad Jamiu

The Nigerian Army has said a National Youth Service Corps member, Abdulsamad Jamiu, was killed after being caught in crossfire during a gun battle with suspected armed robbers in Dei-Dei, Abuja.

In a statement signed by Lieutenant Olawuyi Odunola, the Headquarters Guards Brigade said the incident occurred in the early hours of April 25, 2026, at Shagari Estate when troops on routine patrol responded to a distress call.

The Army said its Quick Response Group came under gunfire from fleeing robbers upon arrival, leading to what it described as a “brief but intense exchange.”

It added that Jamiu was hit during the confrontation and later died from his injuries despite efforts to secure the area and protect residents.

“During the engagement, Mr. Jamiu was caught in the crossfire. Despite efforts by troops to secure the area and preserve lives, he sadly succumbed to his injuries,” the statement said.

The Brigade noted that the situation was “fluid and highly volatile” as soldiers worked to repel the attackers and safeguard the community.

It expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and the National Youth Service Corps, describing the incident as a “heartbreaking loss.”

The Army also disclosed that a full investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, promising that findings would be made public.

It said Jamiu’s remains have been handed over to civil authorities and deposited at Kubwa General Hospital.

The Guards Brigade reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property in the Federal Capital Territory and urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies.
