Nnamdi Kanu wanted more states for Biafra – DSS

The Department of State Services (DSS) has revealed that Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), planned for the five South East states, along with parts of Benue and Kogi, to break away from Nigeria.

The DSS revealed this on May 6, 2025, during Kanu’s ongoing terrorism trial before Justice James Omotosho.

A DSS officer, identified as BBB, appeared as the second prosecution witness (PW2) and testified behind a screen provided by the court.

BBB said Kanu had confirmed his activities when giving his statement, which was also recorded on video.

The prosecuting lawyer, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), presented a compact disc said to contain the video recording of the statement, along with a letter from the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and a certificate of compliance.

However, Kanu’s defence lawyer, Kanu Agabi (SAN), opposed the move to submit these materials, arguing that the defence team had not been given copies in advance.

He stressed that the law requires the prosecution to provide all documents and materials they intend to rely on in the case.

Justice Omotosho ruled that the defence has the right to receive all such materials, referring to Section 36 of the Constitution.

He then directed the prosecution to provide the defence team with all necessary documents and materials before the next court date.

The court adjourned the matter to May 7, 2025, giving the prosecution time to serve the defence and for the second prosecution witness to continue his testimony.
