The Edo State Police Command has rescued a 70-year-old farmer, Pa Jonah Owobu, who was abducted in Uromi after suspected kidnappers demanded a ransom of N30 million.
According to a statement by the Edo state police command, the victim was reported missing by his wife on April 21 after he failed to return from his farm the previous day. She later received a call from unknown individuals demanding payment for his release.
Police said a joint team of operatives, alongside military personnel, local hunters, and members of the Edo State Security Corps, launched a search operation into the forest following the report.
During the operation, the victim’s abandoned motorcycle and personal belongings were recovered, leading security operatives to the suspected hideout.
On sighting the team, the kidnappers reportedly fled into the bush, leaving the victim behind.
The police confirmed that the farmer was rescued unhurt and has been reunited with his family.
Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, said efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects, adding that security operations across the state will be sustained.
He urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to aid the fight against crime.
