The Rivers State House of Assembly has ordered the arrest of Justice Adolphus Enebeli, the Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), for failing to appear before the Assembly.
This decision was made after Enebeli disregarded a 72-hour deadline set by the Assembly.
The lawmakers had initially given him a 48-hour notice, which was extended to 72 hours to ensure he appeared before them.
Enebeli was expected to explain the situation surrounding the annulled local government elections of October 2024, which were nullified by the Supreme Court due to irregularities.
As a result, a new election is set for August 9, 2025.
Despite the summons, Enebeli and other commissioners from the RSIEC did not attend the session.
In response, Enebeli’s team filed a suit at the State High Court, challenging the Assembly’s actions.
The situation has added to the mounting political tension in the state, which includes a Supreme Court ruling barring federal institutions from releasing funds to Rivers State until it complies with court orders.
