President Bola Tinubu has refused to sign a bill seeking to establish a Federal University of Education in Numan, Adamawa State.
The bill which was passed in March 2024 was rejected by the president and sent back to the Senate on December 23, 2024.
In a letter read on Tuesday, January 14 by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Tinubu outlined two main reasons for his decision.
First, he objected to a section of the bill that gives the Adamawa state governor control over land belonging to the federal university.
Tinubu argued that only the President should have authority over federal property, especially in the case of federal universities.
Second, the President noted a spelling mistake in the bill where “statut” was used instead of “status.”
Citing Section 58(4) of the Constitution, Tinubu justified his decision to withhold presidential assent.
The bill was introduced by Senator Binos Yaroe from Adamawa South.
