Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has spoken on a private conversation he had with late President Muhammadu Buhari before his death.
He said the discussion touched on his political relationship and possible disagreements involving President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Lawal made the disclosure during an interview on Channels Television. He explained that the meeting with Buhari happened shortly before the former president passed away.
According to him, Buhari told him that there could be future political disagreement between him and Tinubu because of their different views. He said the former president advised him to be careful in handling such situations if they come up.
Lawal said Buhari made it clear that any disagreement in politics should stay within the limits of governance and public interest. He added that Buhari advised him not to turn political issues into personal attacks, but to focus on matters that concern the country.
He also said he agreed with the advice at the time and gave his word to follow it. Lawal stated that since then, he has tried to keep his public comments about Tinubu focused only on political matters without involving personal issues.
He further explained that Buhari reminded him that it is possible for close allies to find themselves on different sides in politics. However, the former president urged him not to let such differences affect personal relationships.
Lawal said the late president told him, “You are going to fight your friend politically; please promise me you will not go personal with your fight.”
