Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi alongside Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso are set to dump the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 presidential elections.
According to reports, the discussions have reached an advanced stage between the affected politicians and leaders of the NDC.
The discussions are said to be centred on providing a stable platform for the 2027 race following rising concerns within the ADC over leadership disputes and court matters affecting the party structure.
The NDC has also reportedly promised Peter Obi, an unchallenged presidential ticket.
A source familiar with the development told Punch, “I can confirm to you that His Excellency Peter Obi has been consulting many of us who are stakeholders. And considering what is playing out in the ADC, the party seems to be designed and structured to favour an individual aspirant. They are also not ready to zone their presidential ticket to the South.
“If the party structure is skewed in favour of an aspirant, obviously that aspirant will win, and it will not amount to a credible primary election. In addition, if you look at the numerous litigations in the party and the crisis rocking it, His Excellency has concluded that the platform is not formidable for him to contest on.
“Recall that Obi promised his supporters and Nigerians that his name will be on the ballot. We have met with the NDC and they have promised an unchallenged presidential ticket for him to run in 2027.
“All things being equal, in a couple of days, between now and next week, he is expected to dump the ADC for the NDC. It will be a massive move, and all his supporters are also expected to move with him to the NDC. That is what I know.”
The ADC has been dealing with internal disagreements linked to its national leadership and ongoing legal processes. Although a recent Supreme Court decision reversed an earlier order affecting the party’s executives, the matter was sent back to a lower court for further hearing, leaving questions about final control of the party unresolved.
Because of this situation, some members within the coalition believe the party may struggle to remain united ahead of the elections.
This has pushed several leaders to explore other political options where they feel the structure may be more stable and better prepared for national contests.
Those involved in the discussions are also said to be worried about repeated internal clashes among different political blocs within the ADC.
These disagreements have created tension among members and raised doubts about how the party will manage its presidential ticket and broader campaign plans.
On the side of the NDC, party leaders are reportedly open to welcoming new entrants, including Obi and Kwankwaso, and have been engaging in wider talks about possible arrangements for the 2027 election cycle.
