Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved a N50,000 support payment for workers in the state to ease the effect of the current economic situation.
The announcement was made on Friday during the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos. The event focused on the impact of insecurity and poverty on decent work.
The governor was represented by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, who addressed the gathering on his behalf.
The extra payment will be added to workers’ salaries for the month of May. It will apply to all categories of workers in the state, no matter their grade level. The government also stated that the measure may be reviewed in the coming months depending on the situation.
The governor explained that the decision is part of ongoing efforts to support workers across different sectors. He noted that the growth and development of Lagos depend on the daily efforts of people such as teachers, healthcare workers, artisans, and civil servants.
He also spoke about the current economic challenges affecting the country, including rising prices and global energy issues. According to him, these challenges have made it necessary for the government to take practical steps to support workers.
Sanwo-Olu further assured that his administration remains committed to improving workers’ welfare, upgrading infrastructure, and delivering better public services. He said the government will continue to engage with labour unions to maintain peace and cooperation in the workplace.
On security, the governor said a safe environment is important for workers to perform well. He added that the state is investing in security systems, community policing, and surveillance to protect residents.
He also stated that his administration will focus on completing major projects before leaving office. These include transport projects, housing delivery, and payment of pensions.
According to him, the true measure of his government will be seen in completed projects and lasting changes, not just promises.
