The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has called off its strike after 8 months of the industrial action, Dockaysworld has learnt.

The strike was called off after a late night crucial meeting which lasted for six hours, starting at 7pm yesterday, october 13, 2022.

This is coming after the Appeal court ordered the lecturers to return to the classes, reaffirming the earlier decision by the industrial court.

Recall, Dockaysworld reported that ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, assured Nigerian students that the strike would be called within the week following the intervention of the speaker House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila.

The meeting which held overnight, involved the leadership of the union who made the final decision following the voting across state chapters where the majority opted for an end to the industrial action.

The strike comes to an end after the back and forth between the minister of labour and employment Chris Ngige including a particular meeting which involved the minister and the ASUU president almost coming to blows.

The minister has also granted registration to two new unions, a move many have described as targeted at weakening ASUU.

With the end of the strike, universities are expected to announce the resumption of academic activities at the different stages of each respective institution.

The Union is yet to issue an official statement but it is expected to follow shortly.

Recall that the academic body had embarked on a strike starting on 14th of Febuary 2022 which lasted for over 8 months.
